Tusmo Research and Altai Consulting undertook a comprehensive mixed methods study to collect supply and demand side market data on the mobile money ecosystem. The research data collection was completed in 2017 and the analysis will serve to provide advice to the Central Bank of Somalia, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, and ICT and banking industry actors on how to further build out the mobile money ecosystem and augment the sector’s ability to achieve greater financial inclusion and economic contribution to Somalia. The data collection component included market research (FGDs with mobile money users and in-depth interviews of sector experts and agents) as well as a quantitative household survey (around 1,500 households in urban and rural areas across Somalia) to study the current patterns of use of mobile money.
